Pinarayi Vijayan: The first to continue as Kerala CM after full term ANI | Updated: May 20, 2021 15:00 IST New Delhi [India], May 20 (ANI): Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday will take oath for a second consecutive term as chief minister of Kerala breaking the decades-old alternate shift of power between Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the state. Vijayan could become the only third Chief Minister in the state to be re-elected and the first to continue in office after completing a full term. The 76-year-old, who joined the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) in 1964 was elected as the 12th chief minister of Kerala after LDF came to power in 2016.

Instead, she will be appointed as the party’s whip. Her replacement, George, has been a journalist and news anchor in various Malayalam news channels. The 21-member Kerala Cabinet will take oath on Thursday, 20 May. The first-time MLA from Beypore seat and CM Vijayan s son-in-law PA Mohammed Riyas will be the minister for Public Works Department (PWD), while KN Balagopal is the new Finance minister.

This is the second time George is elected to Assembly, that too from the same Aranmula seat she was elected for the first time in 2016. In 2019 however, she failed to make a mark in the election to the lower house of Parliament. George won with a margin of 19,003 votes this time, whereas in 2016 polls, she had wrested the constituency from the Congress, defeating the nearest rival Sivadasan Nair by a margin of 7,646 votes.
