Pending legislation could push area boaters off the Willamette March 04 2021
Proposed bills would restrict towing sports, including in the popular Newberg Pool section of the river
Oregon House Bill 2555 is directly tied to a 20-mile stretch of the Willamette River, but if passed, its ripple effects could be felt as far as Hagg Lake in rural Washington County.
The proposed legislation is aimed at the Newberg Pool and would restrict towing people on wakeboards, wake surfers and inner tubes to name a few to boats not exceeding 4,000 pounds.
The Newberg Pool is the part of the Willamette River roughly between Newberg and Willamette Falls in Oregon City. It is a popular place for area boaters.
Legislation could greatly impact Oregon wine industry March 03 2021
House Bill 3296, the Addiction Crisis Recover Act, is introduced in the Legislature last week and would raise taxes on wine, beer and ciders
A bill introduced in the Legislature last week would significantly increase the taxes levied on wine and other spirits in Oregon, with proceeds directed toward addiction treatment and other services.
House Bill 3296, known as the Addiction Crisis Recovery Act, was introduced by Democratic state Reps. Tawna Sanchez, of Portland, and Rachel Prusak, who represents parts of Washington and Clackamas counties.
The bill would increase taxes on Oregon wine by more than 1,700% and more than 2,800% on beer and cider, the Oregon Wine Council said in a release.
Iâm in the crosswalk between Palmer High School and Daintyâs Jamaican Kitchen with one of the schoolâs security guards, who tells me the staff loves having the new eatery across the street. We pass another guard, and the first asks him about the jerk fries. Without breaking stride, the other guard blurts out: â7 out of 10.â (Jeez, everyoneâs a critic these days.)
Dainty Wheaton moved her business off Fort Carson, where her now-retired husband was stationed and where she ran her Jamaican eatery for seven years. Hearing a few stories she tells me during an interview, I gather she may have been a base mom to soldiers; she was thoughtful to offer items like boneless chicken for troops with limited time to eat, âso they wouldnât have to fool with the bones.â

Fighting to save the lives of three Prineville residents stricken with botulism, state, county and U.S. Army officials cooperated this week to supply life-saving serum, and according to the attending physician, seemed to be winning their fight today.
Prineville s new grade school, the Ochoco school at the western city limits, was put into operation Monday morning with about 350 pupils moving from the temporary quarters at the overcrowded Prineville grade school. R.H. McAtee, principal of the new school, reported an attendance of 347 Wednesday. While the school is not complete in all details, and the gymnasium wing has hardly been started, 11 classrooms were in use this week, with the pupils on a normal school day schedule for the first this school year. At the Prineville grade school, a double shift system was used to accommodate Ochoco grade school pupils, with half attending classes in the morning and the rest in the afternoon.
