What to know about new HSE superintendent Yvonne Stokes

The HSE Board of School Trustees approved her hiring in a 5-2 vote at a special meeting on Thursday, ending a process that started late last year when current superintendent Allen Bourff announced his retirement. Board members Brad Boyer and Suzanne Thomas were the no votes.  She’s currently assistant superintendent for the School Town of Munster and starts as the leader of HSE on July 1. She will be the first woman to lead the district in more than a decade. The appointment wasn t without controversy. About two dozen protesters gathered outside of the meeting ahead of the vote, urging the board to vote no. They held signs that said things such as qualified staff matters, education not indoctrination and teach our kids how to think not what to think.

Because of the number of students in these grades currently in the hybrid in-person model, GRPS isn’t able to combine the cohorts and still maintain six feet of social distancing.

Very few of them are going to answer that they would like to be a teacher when they grow up. And when you ask them why? They ll kind of look at you funny and say that they see how we re treated and how hard we work and how little respect and reward we get for that hard work,” said Winston.
