Elections in India
May 11, 2021
Four Indian states West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and one union territory, Puducherry, went to the polls from April 6 to April 29 in different phases. The counting took place May 2.
May 2 was a good night for anti-BJP forces as they made gains in several key battleground states. Even though the BJP increased its share of seats in West Bengal, it fell short of getting a simple majority to form the government. The BJP increased its seats in West Bengal from 3 to 79; it also won 4 seats in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala, the BJP failed to win a single seat.
Highlights
It will include 24 cabinet ministers and 19 ministers of state.
New Delhi: A week after the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) won a comfortable majority in West Bengal, the party s ministers will take oath at the Raj Bhawan in Kolkata today (May 10, 2021).
A total of 43 ministers will be sworn in including 24 cabinet ministers and 19 ministers of state.
Veteran leaders such as Subrata Mukherjee, Partha Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim, Jyoti Priya Mallick, Moloy Ghatak, Aroop Biswas, Dr Shashi Panja and Javed Ahmed Khan will be made cabinet ministers.
New faces in the council of ministers will have former West Bengal Ranji skipper Manoj Tiwary, IPS officer Humayun Kabir and Siuli Saha. Kabir will be among 10 persons who will become ministers of state (independent charge), and Tiwari along with Saha will take oath as ministers of state.
BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was sworn in as the chief minister of Assam, visited the Kamakhya temple before he took oath, in Guwahati on Monday.
NEW DELHI: Finally, the BJP on Sunday zeroed in on the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the successor to Sarbananda Sonowal as the chief minister of Assam. However, it took a complete one week for the BJP top brass to clinch the vexed issue after the results of the state assembly election were declared on May 2.
Though the violence in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) swept the elections also took the BJP leadership time, Assam did present before it an entangled problem. No wonder, the BJP went against the established tradition of declaring the incumbent chief minister as the face of the assembly election.
