Trusted grandfather jailed for raping granddaughter

Premium Content Subscriber only A Sunshine Coast grandfather who asked his young granddaughter if he could be her boyfriend has been sent to jail for grooming and raping the girl. The 77-year-old man pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court on Tuesday to two counts of rape, three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12 years and one count of grooming. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had a particularly close relationship with his granddaughter and while she was visiting his Kuluin home he escalated their bond to become physical, the court heard. He pleaded guilty to forcibly and aggressively kissing her, touching her inappropriately, sexually assaulting her and asking her whether he could be her boyfriend.

He was sentenced in 2019 to two years and three months in jail, to serve four months. Blyth s home was raided by police in November last year. The now 19-year-old pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court on Tuesday trafficking marijuana after being caught selling the drug 178 times in the Nambour area. The court heard the teen had 35g of marijuana in his car when police stopped him for a random drug and alcohol breath test on June 13, last year. He also handed over his mobile phone to police who discovered text messages between the offender and his customers indicating cost and amounts to be purchased. Crown prosecutor Christopher Cook said the teen would meet up with his clients across the Nambour area between January and June last year.

Loganlea man Aaron John Mannell appeared before Maroochydore District Court on Friday to be sentenced for dangerous driving causing death following the death of his partner, 26-year-old Sabrina Monique Strasberger. The couple were travelling along Chinchilla Wondai Road, Durong, on August 10, 2019, in a convoy of four cars going camping with family. The 27-year-old learner driver was travelling at 100km/h behind three other vehicles when his car veered to the right, colliding with a raised driveway causing the car to flip several times before facing upright in the direction of travel.
