Steamship Authority considers electric ferry future
Hybrid or all-electric ferries could reduce long-term costs and carbon emissions.
The Steamship Authority is investigating the potential to electrify their fleet of vessels in the future.
The Steamship Authority (SSA) is conducting a feasibility study to examine the existing 10-boat fleet, and what it might take to start switching over to electric ferries in the future.
According to a 2018 report, the SSA consumed 1.29 million gallons of diesel on the Vineyard route alone. Implementing hybrid or all-electric ferries would cut that down significantly, and would reduce the overall consumption of fossil fuels for the Island.

Still questions, few answers about Mansion House flow
Wastewater consultant says the town may have excess capacity, though perhaps no recourse over illegal pumping.
How much flow is available at the Tisbury wastewater treatment plant remains a moving target, according to a consultant.
While the illegal discharge has since been fixed, and that water diverted to a leaching field at the 9 Main St. hotel, the town still has little idea how long the illegal pumping was taking place, according to a consultant for the town.
Robert Rafferty, a principal with Environmental Partners, told the board his company hasn’t looked at the issue since mid-December, when the hotel had a leaching field installed. There was an indication that despite some strong comments from select board chair Jim Rogers at the time that the town would someday seek restitution from Mansion House, post-pandemic, there may be little the town can do.

At the Martha’s Vineyard Commission meeting on March 4, toxicology was the focus. The MVC hired Horsley Witten, an environmental firm, to inspect the products used in the proposed turf field, the carpet, the underlying shock pad, and various glues used to build the field. Horsley Witten subcontracted the testing to a very well-respected laboratory, Tetra Tech. Both Horsley Witten and Tetra Tech concluded that the synthetic turf field was safe for our student athletes to come into contact with, and the products tested cleaner for the environment than the existing grass fields at the high school.
