Country’s hosting of FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers gets nod, too
THE Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) push to start its delayed Season 46 caught a break late last week when it got government approval to have its member teams resume practices.
In an announcement made on Friday, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), through Resolution No. 114, gave the go-ahead on the planned workouts of PBA teams in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) or moderate GCQ setup.
Also approved was the country’s hosting of the third window of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup Qualifiers in June in a “bubble” setting at Clark City in Angeles, Pampanga.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the possibility of starting the 46th season next month will hinge on whether the government-approved staging of 5-on-5 scrimmages in areas under General Community Quarantine is a success.
Marcial is giving teams at least a month to hold full practices starting May 18 at the earliest after the Inter-Agency Task Force approved the league’s request to allow such setup under GCQ guidelines.
“Tinitignan natin practices ng isang buwan. Siguro by June or later part ng May baka dahan-dahan natin pag-aaralan kung paano at dahan-dahan tayo makikipagusap kung pwede na tayo mag-start ng season,” Marcial said.

“Registered voters nationwide may apply for a voter’s certification from Mondays to Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4;30 p.m. at the Comelec’s National Central File Division (NCFD) satellite office, located at the back of Chowking in FEMI Building, Extension Cabildo Street cor A. Soriano Avenue, Intramuros, Manila,” the poll body said in a statement.
The poll body, however, reminded the public that they should first make an appointment before going to the Comelec office.
“Applications for the issuance of voter certification are by appointment only. Together with our ‘no face mask, no face shield policy,’ this will ensure that we are protecting the safety of the public, even while the NCR (National Capital Region) Plus remains under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine,” said Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez.

PBA teams could be allowed to hold 5-on-5 scrimmages in areas under General Community Quarantine starting May 18 following the approval of the Inter-Agency Task Force.
Commissioner Willie Marcial plans to meet with players, coaches and team managers next week to begin the process of ensuring the success of the full practices.
The IATF approved Friday, May 7, the PBA’s request to have scrimmages in GCQ areas, subject to the health and safety protocols that will be approved by the Games and Amusements Board.
