It’s been more than a year since Westborough police Sgt. Jon Kalagher shot and killed a man who was stabbing his wife repeatedly during a domestic attack.
To this day, what gets to Kalagher the most is not shooting the suspect. It is what the victim and the neighbors went through before he arrived.
“The part that has got to me in the past year … is the woman and the neighbors and what they were doing in the 50 seconds as I was trying to get there,” Kalagher told the Daily News, his voice choked with emotion. “I just wanted to get into the arena and try to make a difference. I said to myself, ‘I have the tools and training, please let me get there in time.’ ”

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. honors Westborough Police Sgt. Jon Kalagher for saving woman who had been stabbed by husband

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. honored a Westborough police officer on Tuesday who saved a woman by fatally shooting her husband as he attacked her last year.
Sgt. Jon Kalagher was presented with the District Attorney’s Team Excellence and Merit - TEAM - Award, which recognizes outstanding service by those in public safety. Early created the TEAM Award in 2019 to recognize public safety employees who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Kalagher responded to a domestic violence call in November of 2019 where police said a man stabbed his wife several times inside their Windsor Ridge Drive apartment in Westborough. The wife, authorities said, fled to a neighboring apartment where residents called 911. The man followed her and continued to attack her outside the apartment, police said.
