Death of Mikayla Miller triggers calls for an independent investigation, something rarely seen in cases

Nearly three weeks after the body of 16-year-old Mikayla Miller was found, a growing number of residents and politicians are calling for an independent investigation into her death.
“Mikayla Miller deserved to grow old. She had so many basketball games, road trips and HBCU homecomings ahead of her. She deserved childhood uninterrupted,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley said in a statement Tuesday. “There needs to be a full, transparent, independent investigation into her death.”

The family of a Black Massachusetts teen are demanding answers after her body was discovered by a jogger outside a small Massachusetts city last month.
Mikayla Miller, 16, was found dead in a wooded area in Hopkinton April 18. Her manner of death hasn’t been released.
Roughly three weeks later, the young woman’s family and a growing chorus of activists have accused investigators of neglecting the case due to Miller’s race and sexual orientation.

The family of a Black 16-year-old is demanding accountability and transparency after authorities announced an investigation into the teenager’s death last month in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Mikayla Miller’s body was found by a jogger in the woods off a walking path during the early morning of April 18, according to a Tuesday news release from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.
The day before, authorities said, the teen’s mother made a complaint about her daughter being “jumped.” The teen reported that she was punched in the face and showed blood in her lip. The investigation into the physical assault remains open and there are no charges so far.
