COVID-19 in Mississippi: 500 new cases, 8 deaths reported over 3 days

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 500 new cases of COVID-19 and eight coronavirus-related deaths Friday though Sunday. MSDH announced April 26 that it will begin reporting the three-day totals over the weekend each Monday moving forward. Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 312,400 cases and 7,207 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.  According to a New York Times database Monday, at least 299 new coronavirus deaths and 29,536 new cases were reported in the U.S. Sunday. Over the past week, there has been an average of 49,266 cases per day, a decrease of 27% from the average two weeks earlier. The department on Monday reported 32 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,442 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 1,974 deaths reported as of April 16, the latest figures available.
