I have had servers even apologize before I have even ordered, that there may be a delay due to people not showing up for work, or not enough employees on the floor. Recently Joe Gilbert, owner of The Fireplace in Fenton, posted a Facebook video stating the same thing. The Fireplace was closed for a short time, and COVID cases were not the only reason. As you will hear in the video, Joe said part of the reason for the bar/restaurant being closed was because he just did not have enough employees.

Earlier today, Gov. Whitmer asked Michiganders to hold off and avoid indoor dining at restaurants for the next two weeks as COVID-19 cases continue to increase at a rapid pace across the state.

Infectious disease and public health experts across the country have been quite clear that indoor dining is one of the riskiest things you can do during this pandemic. With the numbers we are seeing now, we simply do not recommend it. You should order takeout, a drive-through service or do outdoor dining.

Michigan’s restaurant industry was devastated by the pandemic, over 3000 restaurants closed. But with those establishments permanently closing, opportunities for new businesses to fill that gap is appealing to some. Gina and Mike Mudrey had to close their downtown dining location, but found an opportunity in East Lansing and opened for Crepe Sake in March.
Then there’s the Side Door Kitchen in an industrial building in southeast Jackson, they stay quite busy. People driving by can smell the meats cooking in the smoker. Marissa Olmstead along with her partner and step father Chris Sirvinskis, say some people were shocked when they announced they were opening. Marissa says “It’s kinda scary” but “We’re willing to take the chance.” This is a new venture for her, she used to be a corporate chef and lost work after the pandemic, and eventually decided she wanted to make her dream of opening her own restaurant
