New COVID-19 cases plummet in Michigan Mike Stucka USA TODAY NETWORK Michigan reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 38,100 new cases. That s down 28.5% from the previous week s tally of 53,296 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19. Michigan ranked first among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 13.8% from the week before, with 407,147 cases reported. With 3% of the country s population, Michigan had 9.36% of the country s cases in the last week. Across the country, 11 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Michigan reports 3 676 new COVID-19 cases, 105 deaths

As of Tuesday, Michigan has 5,784 confirmed cases of the UK variant (B.1.1.7) and five probable cases, with 517 confirmed cases reported in the Michigan Department of Corrections. In addition, there are 27 confirmed and two probable cases of the B.1.351 strain first detected in South Africa. Two strains originally detected in California, B.1.427 and B.1.429, account for 61 and 172 cases, respectively, and there have been 69 confirmed cases and one presumed case of the P.1 strain originally detected in Brazil. Michigan has a total of 6,121 variant cases. Of 33,848 diagnostic tests reported Monday, 4,637 yielded positive results  a positivity rate of 13.7%. Included in Tuesday s report were 93,944 probable cases and 1,134 probable deaths, for a total of 923,464 cases and 18,563 deaths.

Disability Rights Michigan with the Lipton Law firm filed a federal lawsuit Monday, April 19, in U.S. District Court seeking $5 million in damages against Corizon Health and several medical staff members for the wrongful death of Ashley Harris, 31, who died while incarcerated in the Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti Township in 2018.
