Chalk up another victory for the hospitality industry in Berrien County. At last night's Buchanan City Commission meeting, City Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a Social District as presented by Community Development Director, Richard Murphy. With that vote, Buchanan joins other Southwest Michigan communities including Niles, Bridgman, and St. Joseph in creating a walkable social district for their community. City Commissioner Patrick Swem says, "We've been discussing the possibility of doing a social district for an extended period of time, being able to move forward with the application process is something that we are all excited for." State Approves St Joseph Social District

May 25, 2021 The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has approved the city of St. Joseph’s request to establish a social district downtown. The social district will enable people to buy alcoholic drinks from participating businesses and then carry them around in designated areas. The idea is to have more foot traffic circulating to help restaurants and stores recover from the pandemic. St. Joe City Manager John Hodgson says the state approved the plan Friday. Now, each business that wants to participate can request specific permits from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission with support from the city commission. The commission has scheduled a special meeting for this Thursday to make recommendations for the interested businesses. The social district will cover the downtown area.

Buchanan Approves Social District

Coming soon to downtown Buchanan will be a social district. The city council approved it on Monday. Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber Director of Membership Sarah Spoonholtz tells WSJM News within a social district, a person can carry around an alcoholic beverage if it’s purchased at a participating business and in a one-time use, marked container. Buchanan’s social district will run north and south of Front Street between Red Bud Trail and Main Street on the north, and Days Avenue and South Oak Street to the south. Spoonholtz says this makes four Berrien County communities to have approved social districts this year.

Gov Whitmer signed four bills benefitting Michigan craft distillers

View Comments Gov. Gretchen Whitmer today signed legislation making business and distribution easier for the state s craft spirit makers.  It cuts red tape for Michigan-based craft distilleries and retailers where ready-to-drink cocktails (also know as canned cocktails ) are concerned. These types of beverages have been growing in popularity, particularly during the pandemic.  Spirit makers can increase the alcohol by volume percentage of canned cocktails from 10% to 13.5% so long as they are packaged in a can less than 24-ounces. The bills also reduce the tax on mixed spirits from $0.48 per liter to $0.30 per liter.  “We thank the Governor and the bi-partisan efforts in both the House and Senate for recognizing the importance of the craft distilling industry in Michigan as well as the need to make these changes which create new opportunities to get products to market,” said Jon O’Connor, co-founder of Long Road Distillers and Michigan Craft Distillers Association Pr
