A 24-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after leading law enforcement on a car chase before barricading himself in a home while armed with a gun.
The chain of events began around 12:38 p.m. when deputies with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office noticed a car with unregistered plates weaving through traffic about 80 mph in the 5500 block of West Hampton Avenue on Milwaukee’s north side, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Before initiating a traffic stop, deputies pulled alongside the car at a traffic light and saw the driver waving a semi-automatic handgun around, the release said. After deputies activated emergency lights and sirens, the suspect vehicle stopped in the 6000 block of West Mill Road but took off before deputies could approach the car.
During this period, MCSO reminds the motoring public of the following tips for safe driving in winter weather conditions:
Remember that excessive speed and following to close contribute to crashes
Reduce your speed to match road conditions. Double or even triple your following distance; instead of keeping two car lengths between you and the car in front of you, maintain a distance of four or even six car lengths.
Wear your seatbelt.
Slow down and prepare to stop.
Move over or slow down for first responders and emergency personnel
If you are in a ditch: Turn on your hazard lights, remain in your vehicle, and call 911.

Milwaukee County may soon be advocating for a modernization of interstate infrastructure to improve traffic safety on the network of state highways that run through the county.
County Supervisor
Russell Antonio Goodwin, Sr. recently sponsored a resolution intended to draw attention to an interstate network he feels is needlessly dangerous in some areas. His resolution calls for a universal speed limit for interstates in Milwaukee County, citing the patchwork network of speed limits that contribute to sudden changes in speed between vehicles and dangerous bottlenecks on the freeways.
