Vodafone swings to profit despite travel ban hit to roaming Mobile operator s revenues are under pressure from weak smartphone sales and customers not travelling 18 May 2021 • 7:51am Vodafone has swung to profit despite revenues continuing to suffer from sluggish smartphone sales and pandemic-induced travel bans.  The mobile operator recorded a €536m (£460m) profit for the year, compared to a €455m loss in 2020 when it wrote off the value of its Indian joint venture Vodafone Idea.  Those charges – the fees some customers pay when using their mobile phone abroad – were hit particularly hard as fewer customers travelled overseas at the height of the pandemic.

Sky under fire for not telling customers when TV contracts end Ofcom provisionally finds that the pay TV broadcaster broke its rules over contract notifications, but Sky disagrees 14 May 2021 • 3:26pm Sky is bracing for a showdown with the regulator after failing to tell customers when their contracts are ending.  Ofcom concluded Sky contravened, and continues to contravene rules demanding a swathe of its TV customers are told when their contracts are up for renewal.  The regulator said it had reasonable grounds to believe Sky has been breaching the rules since March 26 last year.  Ofcom has provisionally found Sky should comply with the end-of-contract notification regulations ahead of a final decision by the end of the summer.

The telecoms operator is about to publish more ambitious targets for its broadband rollout which will include enhanced coverage in the most remote parts of the country. BT had previously pledged to lay full-fibre cables to 20m homes and businesses by the mid-to-late 2020s, but chief executive Philip Jansen is now poised to go further and faster.
