The recent reforms in our defence structures, beginning with the inadequate and half-baked creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff heading a newly created separate Department of Military Affairs (DMA) as well as the current exercise in creating integrated theatre commands are simply not the right way forward for a country of the size and stature of India in general and her Armed Forces in particular.Â

In a major development, Pakistan’s Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), General Nadeem Raza, visited Turkey from 27th March to 2nd April.
Turkey’s Chief of General Staff, General Yaşar Güler, hosted Raza at the Turkish General Staff Headquarters on 30th March, where both the sides discussed collaborations on several military projects and existing geopolitical issues.
During the get-together, Güler conferred Turkey’s top military award ‘Legion of Merit’ to Raza for his “services for promotion of Pakistan-Turkey defence ties.”
Though the award ceremony and enhancement of military ties were quoted as the official reasons for the visit, many believe that actual reason might be entirely different.

In late March, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Nadeem Raza held talks with Iraqi Defence Minister Juma Enad Sadoon Khattab Al Jibori, Iraqi Chief of Staff General Abdul Ameer Rasheed Yar Allah Al Lami and Commander Iraqi Air Force Lieutenant General Shahab Jihad Ali.

NEW DELHI: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat dispelled apprehensions on Wednesday that the creation of theatre commands to increase the synergy among the Army, Navy and Air Force would lead to one service usurping the other two as he described such concerns as a misnomer .
In an address at the Vivekananda International Foundation, he said the three service chiefs had given in writing to the government around two years ago that they wanted an integrated system to come in.
The CDS said integration and jointness among the three services are important for the country to face future security challenges.

Synopsis There is always hesitation to change. We are a status-quoist nation.. There is a feeling that the Army being the large service compared to the Navy and the Air Force, it will possibly usurp the two entities and possibly everything will become Army-centric. This is a misnomer, he said.

General Rawat took over as the country s first CDS on January 1 last year with a mandate to bring in convergence among the three services and restructure the military commands to effectively deal with future security challenges.
