CORNELIUS, NC The spread of coronavirus is declining slowly in Mecklenburg County, according to county health officials. Friday morning, Mecklenburg County reported 88,594 known COVID-19 cases and 797 deaths, representing an increase of more than 4,100 new cases and 31 lives lost to the virus in the span of seven days. In Cornelius, at least 2,260 cases and 21 COVID-19 deaths were confirmed as of Feb. 4, according to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services data. The tally represents an increase of at least 96 new cases in Cornelius in a week.

More than two-thirds of the people vaccinated by Mecklenburg County Public Health are white, according to data released Tuesday that provided a race and ethnicity breakdown for the first time at the local level. Only 16% of people given first doses of the COVID-19 vaccines by the health department have been Black. That s a big disparity compared to the county s demographics, which show nearly 32% of people in Mecklenburg are Black, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. By contrast, 69% of people given first doses by the county are white, and white people comprise 54% of the county population.

Mint Museum, Discovery Place, Bechtler To Reopen As Health Directive Extended

The Mint Museum will reopen Friday after being closed for three weeks. Some Charlotte museums are reopening this week, even though Mecklenburg County’s health directive encouraging people to stay at home to lessen the spread of COVID-19 was extended through February. After Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris issued the directive on Jan. 12, several museums including both branches of the Mint closed for three weeks. Harris last week announced she was extending her directive until the end of February. The directive calls on people to “stay home” and “only leave your home for essential activities such as going to work (only if your work is essential) or childcare, for health care purposes, to care for family members or to buy food or other essential items.”
