Federal Judge Orders End to DACA; Current Enrollees Safe for Now

Federal Judge Orders End to DACA; Current Enrollees Safe for Now Voice of America 17 Jul 2021, 09:35 GMT+10 HOUSTON - A federal judge in Texas on Friday ordered an end to an Obama-era program that prevented the deportations of some immigrants brought into the United States as children. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen ruled in favor of Texas and eight other conservative states that had sued to halt the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which provides limited protections to about 650,000 people. People who are already enrolled won t lose protections, but Hanen is barring the processing of new applications. Hanen s decision limits the immediate ability of President Joe Biden, who pledged during his campaign to protect DACA, to keep the program or something similar in place. His ruling is the second by a federal judge in Texas stopping Biden s immigration plans, after a court barred enforcement of Biden s 100-day stay on most deportations.

Judge orders end to DACA; current enrollees are safe for now

HOUSTON  Immigrants and advocates are urging Democrats and President Biden to quickly act on legislation to protect young immigrants after a federal judge in Texas on Friday ruled illegal an Obama-era program that prevents the deportation of thousands of them brought into the U.S. as children. Plaintiffs have vowed to appeal the decision by U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen, who declared the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program illegal, barring the government from approving any new applications but leaving the program intact for existing recipients. Calling the ruling a “blaring siren” for Democrats, United We Dream Executive Director Greisa Martinez Rosas said they would be solely to blame if legislative reform doesn’t happen.

Judge rules Obama-era DACA immigration program illegal

Marilyn Nieves/iStock (AUSTIN) A federal judge in Texas ruled Friday that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program was unlawful in a significant blow to the Obama-era approach that shielded young people brought to the country illegally from deportation. U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen sided with a group of nine states led by Texas and concluded that the creation of the DACA program violated federal administrative law. Hanen emphasized in his decision that his ruling does not compel immigration authorities to arrest and deport recipients, but it does make them eligible. DACA was created by former President Barack Obama in 2012 to provide relief for the growing population of undocumented immigrant minors, sometimes called Dreamers, who had little to no say in their immigration process due to their youth. It s estimated there are about 650,000 people who hold DACA status,
