Former U.P. sheriff’s deputy facing 11 more felony sex assault charges Updated 11:56 AM; MENOMINEE, MI – A former Upper Peninsula sheriff’s deputy who was sentenced to jail last year related to sexual assault accusations is now charged with 11 more felony sex crimes, WLUC reports. Brian Helfert, former sergeant with the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, was arraigned Friday, April 30 on 11 felony counts: four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves penetration and comes with a max penalty of life in prison; three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct; assault with intent to commit penetration; child sexually abusive activity; and gross indecency between males, the TV station reports. A sexually delinquent person notice was also filed against him.

Logan D. Race, 17, is charged with assault with intent to murder and being in possession of a firearm during a felony over the Dec. 28 incident.  A second Oconto teen, who was 14 at the time but since turned 15, faces the same charges, but his extradition to Michigan is pending, said Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg. At the arraignment hearing on Wednesday, 95-A District Court Judge Robert Jamo formally advised Race of the charges, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, and appointed attorney Joe Klumb to represent Race in Michigan, Rogg said.

She was the couple’s first baby together. 10 Delta County Sheriff’s Department now has two K-9 units after Deputy Chad Newton and K-9 Officer Sage completed training. Newton and Sage, a female Dutch shepherd, are a certified K-9 unit after weeks of being trained by K-9 Master Trainer Marty Munger of Superior K-9 Training, based in Marquette.
