MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Repair to the I-40 bridge will be performed in two phases and both phases must be complete before traffic can reopen.
There’s still no actual traffic on the nearly 50-year-old I-40 bridge, but there is some movement in plans to repair it.
Wednesday, Stupp Bridge Company in Bowling, Kentucky will deliver 11,000 pounds of steel to Memphis for a temporary fix by putting steel plates on both sides of the fractured support beam underneath the bridge.

The recent action by Governor Lee ending his declaration of a state-wide public health emergency, as well as the decision of the Shelby County Health Dept. to lift its own mask mandate, indicate that masking is no longer legally mandated.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said they do not know when the I-40 bridge will be open during a news conference in Memphis Wednesday.
According to state authorities, Arkansas hired a team to take a look at the bridge as part of routine inspections every two years. The team on the ground saw a fracture Tuesday and immediately called 911 to have the bridge shut down.
Also known as the Hernando DeSoto Bridge, the structure carries traffic on I-40 over the Mississippi River between Memphis, Tennessee and West Memphis, Arkansas. It opened in 1973 and carried more than 37,000 vehicles a day in 2018. It was last inspected in 2019 and is inspected every two years, TDOT said.

City of Memphis Solid Waste Director Al Lamar is no longer employed by the city of Memphis, the city confirmed Monday.
The city of Memphis said Lamar had decided to pursue other opportunities. Deputy Chief Operating Officer Chandell Ryan will lead the solid waste department on an interim basis, the city said.
Lamar s departure comes after the city government, and its contractors struggled to pick up trash this spring, particularly in parts of East Memphis, Cordova and Hickory Hill. The situation caused Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland to apologize multiple times and led to the city s contractor, Waste Pro, being fired and replaced on an emergency basis by Team Waste.
