After IPOB s attack-on-sight directive: Police operatives live in fear in S East

Many northerners in the South-East are also living in fear after many of them have been killed and their property worth millions of naira destroyed. Security experts including those who keep track of attacks said in the five states in the zone – Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu and Imo,  more than 40 attacks have been launched  in 2021 alone in the emerging trend of onslaught on security personnel and wanton destruction of security facilities and operational assets. If neighbouring states in the South South, especially Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River, are added, the number of attacks is more than 60, leaving not less than 50 security personnel killed.

Stop attacks on security formations now

Force spokesperson, Frank Mba, said “preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers, who came in their numbers with sophisticated weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns, Sub-Machine Guns, AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades, Improvised Explosive Devices, are members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).” President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attacks, calling them “act of terrorism.” Buhari, in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, directed security and intelligence agencies in the state and the geo-political zone to fully mobilize and go after the “terrorists, apprehend them and get them punished under the full weight of the law.”

Igbo group condemns Owerri attacks, calls for investigation On By Clifford Ndujihe A PAN-Igbo socio-cultural think tank group, Nzuko Umunna has decried the wreaking of mayhem on the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and Nigeria Custodial Centre both in Owerri, Imo State by gunmen and urged a thorough investigation of the attacks. With members spread across Nigeria and the Diaspora, the group ”strongly condemned the wanton destruction of public assets by the attackers and reported death of at least one fleeing inmate of the correctional centre.” In a statement by Mr Ngozi Odumuko, co-ordinator, and Dr Paschal Mbanefo, secretary-general, Nzuko Umunna urged ”the South-East Governors Forum, SEGF, and the State Houses of Assembly to immediately revisit the popular quest for a regional security framework towards safeguarding the citizens against bandits, kidnappers and killer herdsmen.
