NEW BEDFORD The New Bedford City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to begin the process of renaming one of the city s three middle schools after the late former Mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr.
Seven councilors Ian Abreu, Naomi Carney, Maria Giesta, Brian Gomes, Linda Morad, William Markey and Scott Lima filed the motion to rededicate one of the schools in his name during the council meeting.
Kalisz, who died at 63 from COVID-19 complications on Jan. 27, oversaw the construction of three new middle schools during his tenure as mayor from 1998 to 2006: Roosevelt Middle School, 2001; Normandin Middle School, 2003; and Keith Middle School, 2006.
The councilors wrote the new schools were the first to be constructed in almost 30 years as a result of Kalisz s unrelenting leadership and guidance.

On Jan. 15, Montigny and Pacheco, along with 26 other legislators, wrote a letter to Secretary Marylou Sudders of Health and Human Services along with Gov. Charlie Baker demanding that a local site be established after noticing the closest location was Gillette Stadium. For those who do not have reliable transportation and cannot travel via public transportation outside of the Greater New Bedford area, vaccination would be nearly impossible.
That was the same day Mitchell Tweeted a map of the vaccination sites showing the disparity in southeastern Massachusetts.
The vacant Circuit City building in Dartmouth was considered for a vaccination location due to its size and capability to deliver up to 5,000 doses per day. Two shooting incidents in New Bedford broke the early morning still on Saturday, further shattering the myth that violent crime is under control here. The shootings occurred as the ongoing feud between the news media and the secretive Mitchell Administration has reached a fever pitch over the administration s refusal to make information about crime available to the public in a timely manner.
Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro defended his decision not to notify the public that a gunman had fired eight rounds at a police officer s home. Unfortunately, Cordeiro also failed to immediately inform most police officers in New Bedford and the surrounding communities, a decision that placed their lives in jeopardy. For days, Mayor Jon Mitchell s administration defended Cordeiro s actions even after it became clear that Cordeiro had misrepresented the truth.
