OCEAN CITY, Md. The Ocean City Fire Department performed several water rescues Sunday, including one incident that left a man in critical condition, after strong rip currents churned up the ocean.
On Sunday OCFD responded to nine water rescue calls throughout the day, according to department public information officer Ryan Whittington.
In the case of the critical patient, the fire department received a call about an individual in distress in the ocean near Fifth Street just before 2 p.m., Whittington said.
“Our fire department rescue swimmer arrived on scene and observed a male subject who was floating in the water, Whittington said. Multiple of our fire department rescue swimmers responded into the ocean.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Three boaters were pulled from the water south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a diver rescued a fourth boater from beneath their capsized boat after a collision, Maryland authorities said.
A person who spotted flares Thursday night found the capsized 30-foot (9-meter) boat and three people in the water nearby, Natural Resources Police said in a release. By the time Anne Arundel County and Annapolis fire department boats arrived, the three had been pulled from the water onto another boat, but a fourth person was missing and believed to be in the capsized boat’s cabin, police said.

Four people were rescued after a boat capsized Thursday night near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Maryland Natural Resources police say.
Officials say Maryland Natural Resources Police responded just before 10 p.m. to south of the Bay Bridge about a capsized boat. Officials say a good Samaritan in the area spotted flare sightings, and when he got closer, he saw a 30 foot Cuddy Cabin vessel capsized with three people nearby in the water.
Fireboats from Anne Arundel County and the Annapolis Fire Department arrived and located an overturned boat. Three occupants who were in the water had been removed by a good Samaritan and were on another boat, officials said. A fourth male occupant was missing and believed to be in the cabin.
