KITCHENER Police presence in Guelph, Wellington County, and Dufferin County schools has been significantly reduced. Upper Grand District School Board trustees voted to remove the resource officer program from schools during a Tuesday night meeting. After the program came under fire in June of last year, a decision was deferred in March of this year in order to get more feedback from parents, students, and staff. The council voted unanimously in favour of ending the resource officer program during the most recent meeting. “We reached out to so many different groups through so many means and methods that I think we developed as comprehensive idea of what the community needs and what’s possible,” said trustee Mike Foley.
The Upper Grand District School Board is offering mental health webinars.
Mental health leads from the school board noticed the pandemic’s growing impact and wanted to offer families some support.
The “Hope in Times of Uncertainty: Raising Resilient Children” webinar will feature guest speaker Dr. Michael Ungar.
He will share stories to help participants understand resilience and achieve hope in times of uncertainty.

Students in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph region won’t be returning to the classroom anytime soon, as the local health unit aligns its remote learning order with the province.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) announced the decision to allow the local Section 22 Order to expire, and continue with the provincial order on Thursday (April 15).
“With the Province’s announcement this week that all schools will move to remote learning, the local Section 22 Order issued by Dr. Nicola Mercer will not be extended (and will expire on Sunday, April 18),” said Danny Williamson, communications specialist with WDG Public Health. “This will ensure there is no confusion between local and provincial guidance on schools.”

Students in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) will be making the shift to remote learning once again, as Public Health issues a Section 22 Order.
Both the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health and UGDSB issued press releases late Monday (April 5) evening notifying that the change would go into effect starting April 7.
“I wish this step was not required,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of WDG Public Health. “I know the tremendous burden this places on families in our region. The growing number of cases across the province and the severity of the COVID-19 variants of concern places all of us at risk.”
