Bahraini architecture, culture and living have been the focus of a design exchange programme supported by a leading university in the US.
The Hotel Project is part of Iowa State University’s College of Design Architecture and Interior Design curriculum to enhance students’ understanding of design as well as learning about different cultures and living.
It has been led by Professor Lee Cagley and includes advisory committee members Rob Reinders and Hisham Arafat.
Hisham, a Bahraini architect, suggested using the kingdom, in particular Water Garden City – Bahrain, as an ideal location to base the design concept.
“I was requested to assist in recommending a location in the Gulf region to allow students to research and understand a new culture in their design process,” said Hisham, a Iowa State University alumnus who found the project and overall experience enriching to the students and himself. “I recommended Bahrain due to its heritage, culture, diversity and cosmopolit
Two designers have shared their love for the kingdom’s culture and heritage by crafting unique jewellery and creating a film featuring three prominent Bahraini female creatives.
Virginie Dreyer and Nathaly Jung’s The Land of Destiny is a jewellery collection hand-crafted in 18k rose gold and inspired by the minimalist ancient script Cuneiform.
Virginie is a jewellery designer at tinyOM while Nathaly is an artist and founder of the home decor brand Yalla Habibi.
“We have been friends for many years and share artistic ventures,” said Virginie.
“We both call Bahrain home and during our visit to the Bahrain National Museum, we came across a minimalist ancient script called Cuneiform. It was the widely used writing system from the ancient Middle East, dating back to 3,400BC.

Designers are being urged by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca) to collaborate with local artisans to help create more ‘Made in Bahrain’ products, writes Mai Al-Khatib-Camille.
There are also plans to host workshops for art lovers to join in the fun once it is safe to do so, post the pandemic.
Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Baca’s director-general of arts and culture, said: “We are opening the doors for designers and artisans in Bahrain to share with us their proposals on what they’d like to produce in collaboration with the craftsmen at Al Jasra Handicraft Centre.
