MSO, Hamer Hall, July 9
Being overshadowed by an illustrious namesake can be challenging. Take “Rach 2”, immediately associated with Rachmaninov’s brilliant Piano Concerto No 2, rather than his Symphony No. 2. It may not have the same memorable musical clout, but this vast, hour-long hyper-romantic score has its own charms.

By lush harmonic and melodic turns of phrase, the symphony did indeed charm a capacity audience greeting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as it re-emerged from the city’s latest lockdown, the work’s broad impulse towards tension and release resonating with the all-too-common pandemic scenario of separation and reunion.

STATEN ISLSND, N.Y. By his hospital bedside, a friend played Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” just before Michael Halpern died on July 30, 2019, said his wife, Valerie Halpern.
He died at age 71 at peace with the fact that Staten Island Day Camp, which he created in 1979, hit its 40-year mark, and he was there to celebrate it, she said.
“Mike was so wonderful with the kids. He was a ‘big kid’ himself,” recalled his wife. “He touched so many lives.”
But he never could have foreseen the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and how it would impact his day camp, which his wife had intended to continue as part of his legacy.

It has also taken over Campbell’s 113,000 square foot bakery facility in South River, which will give Jimmy’s additional capacity to diversify its gourmet cookie and dough business.
Ecce Panis is a premium brand of hand-crafted, stone-baked artisan bread and rolls that are sold to consumers through instore bakeries of retailers and grocery chains across the US. Campbell acquired the brand in 2009 and ran it under its Pepperidge Farm bakery operations.
