Microsoft has released the latest firmware update for the Surface Duo, its dual-screen phone powered by Android. The company promised security and feature updates for the next three years at launch, and it s been mostly living up to that.
The update arrives with firmware version 2021.419.70 in North America, and 2021.419.72 in Europe. As you might expect, it adds this month s Android security patch, but it also comes with a handful of fixes and improvements to stability and reliability. There were a few complaints about the Duo s software bugs at launch, but Microsoft has continuously been making improvements over time. Here s the full changelog:

But if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool phone enthusiast, you don’t need a guide that’s going to give you the best rational recommendation. We already know that Samsung will be bringing the heat this Summer when it launches the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 presumably in August. However, a new report from DigiTimes suggests that Samsung won't be the only company bringing more foldable smartphones to the market. In the report, it's suggested that Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo will all be launching new foldable smartphones in the 2nd half of the year. But instead of being concept devices, all of these options will be made available for the public. We aren't sure yet as to what the global availability will look like, but at this point, it doesn't matter too much. Xiaomi's Mi Mix Fold was launched last month, and is priced around $1,600, but is only currently available in China. This undercuts the retail price of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 by $400, but it seems that Samsung has permanently discounted the Z Fold 2 as it can regularly be found for closer to $1,800, if not lower. The Microsoft Surface Duo is a double-screen phone with a hinge that folds the two sides together like a book. Each screen is 8.1 inches with 2700-by-1800 resolution at 401 pixels per inch. By dint of having two screens, the Duo is an odd duck in the Android world, with most apps not built to take advantage of its dual-screen nature. Microsoft apps are optimized for it, however, and that s where this device truly shines.

One excellent feature that recently came to the Duo is support for xCloud, Microsoft s Xbox Cloud Gaming service for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The update turns the Duo into a portable gaming machine for streaming Xbox console titles.
