RCMP said in a release earlier in the week that a 15-year-old boy from Winnipeg was also arrested but he was released without charges.
Police say Benoit was a much-loved mother who was researching her Metis background and history before she died.
She had been reported missing to Winnipeg police on July 10. RCMP said she was last seen in the area of Portage la Prairie and Long Plain First Nation on May 23.
In a news conference on Thursday, RCMP Supt. Michael Koppang said he could not provide many details on what happened. RCMP, Winnipeg police, and the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were involved in the investigation.
The remains of Tamara (Norman) Benoit, 36, were discovered in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie, west of Winnipeg, on Sept. 3. She had been reported missing to Winnipeg police on July 10.
Mounties said the woman was last seen in the area of Portage la Prairie and Long Plain First Nation on May 23.
Ryan Peters, 37, of Long Plain First Nation was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder.

Two arrests were made between January 5-6, 2021, in relation to the investigation into the death of Tamara Benoit (Norman).
Benoit was reported missing to the Winnipeg Police Service on July 10, 2020, and was last seen in the Portage la Prairie and Long Plain First Nation area on May 23, 2020. On September 3, 2020, Manitoba First Nation Police Service located human remains near Cottonwood Drive in the RM of Portage la Prairie. The remains were identified as the 36-year-old woman.

A 37-year-old man from the Long Plain First Nation has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to the murder of Tamara Norman Benoit, 36, who was last seen in May and reported missing in July.
Her body was discovered near Cottonwood Drive in the RM of Portage la Prairie on Sept. 3.

On Thursday, RCMP announced that Ryan Peters, 37, from the Long Plain First Nation, had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact. A 15-year-old Winnipeg boy was also arrested in the matter, but released without charges.
