Authorities: Man charged after overnight manhunt in Rankin County

View Comments A Florence man has been taken into custody after Rankin County deputies spent the night looking for him in the woods after receiving a call about an armed man.  Officials said Randy Gilmore, 27, was taken into custody Friday morning while trying to flag down cars. He was taken to the Rankin County Jail, charged with disorderly conduct and failure to comply. Rankin County Sheriff s Office legal counsel Paul Holley said deputies received a call at 6 p.m. Thursday that Gilmore was carrying several guns. According to a news release early Friday afternoon, deputies were sent to George Warren Road near Shiloh Road to search for Gilmore, who had found a ride to another location.

Share Updated: 11:33 AM CDT Apr 26, 2021 A 71-year-old woman died in a house fire Sunday night in Pelahatchie, Rankin County, officials said.The fire was reported about 11 p.m. on Red Oak Road, according to officials with the Rankin County Sheriff s Office. When deputies and firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to a nearby travel trailer and a motor home on the property.The woman s body was found in the home after the fire was extinguished. Authorities said while foul play is not suspected, the cause of the fire has not been determined.The woman s name will not be released until her family has been notified, officials said.

Death of Rankin County teen struck by car accidental, authorities say

What was initially thought to be a hit-and-run that killed a Rankin County teen has been determined to be an accident. Irina Gutierrez, 17, was walking along Old Fannin Road on the night of Feb. 26 when she was struck by a vehicle. According to the Rankin County Sheriff s Office, she was found unresponsive and taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Deputies first thought she had been struck by more than one vehicle because a driver who struck her and who remained on the scene said Gutierrez was on the ground when she hit her. That was the assumption we had at the time and we continued to operate under that assumption in the initial part of the investigation, Paul Holley, legal counsel for the Rankin County Sheriff s Office, said Tuesday.

Richland fire chief reported missing has been found

Richland Fire Chief Brandon Weems is in fair condition after he had been missing for more than a day.Weems was found Wednesday evening after a search involving multiple law enforcement and fire agencies. Prior to that, Weems was last heard from about 10 a.m. Tuesday, Richland Police Chief Russel James said. Witnesses said Weems was found in the attic of his home near Florence. This was made possible thanks to the response of local and state first responders as well as community support, said officials with the Rankin Sheriff s Office. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office wants to thank all of the agencies and individuals that contributed to the safe return of Chief Weems. During a news briefing Thursday, James thanked the community for their support. The last couple of days have been very trying, James said.
