It is May 6, and – well over a year into a global pandemic that has impacted every member of the Staten Island community – it is time to pause for National Nurses Day 2021, part of this year’s nurse appreciation week.
It is difficult to send our thoughts back to last spring, when New York City was the epicenter of an emerging global pandemic, PPE was in short supply, the hospital beds were full, and morgues were working overtime to manage those who did not survive.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. In the years past there was an abundance of hospitals located on Staten Island. Here are some facts about our health care history.
Above, the Seaside Hospital was established at New Dorp Beach in 1886. This was also known as the Children’s Hospital New Dorp.
Seaside Hospital was converted into a privately owned nursing home in 1952
Richmond University Medical Center director honored for going “Above and Beyond”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. When City & State magazine released its “Above and Beyond” honorees for 2021, among the roster of 40 women from across the state of New York was Trientina “Tina” Campbell, director/coordinator of Environmental Health and Safety/Emergency Preparedness for Richmond University Medical Center.
Campbell is one of 39 other high profile women in politics, non-profit leadership, education, civil rights, and healthcare who are also “Above and Beyond” honorees. City & State magazine covers New York’s local and state politics and policy.
