For the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers, this year has been full of firsts.
The home of the oldest woman accused of witchcraft and executed during the 17th century Salem Witch Trials typically hosts an annual ceremony in memory of Nurseâs death in July 1692.
This year, to celebrate her 400th birthday, the homestead in February invited people to mail in a birthday postcard for Nurse from their hometown. The historic site on Pine Street has only been partially open to visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, international bestselling author Brunonia Barry will reflect on the city she calls home and speak to how Salem has inspired her writing throughout her successful, productive career. The virtual presentation, from 6 to 7 p.m., is free of charge and sponsored by The House of the Seven Gables.
With three bestselling novels linked to Salem still widely read throughout the world, a fourth novel recently completed, and a fifth novel in its creative infancy, Barry has found Salem to be a source of limitless inspiration. The views from her office feed her. The streets she walks, just as Nathaniel Hawthorne did 170 years ago, cue up for her not merely inspiration but ideas, scenes and themes.

Band of dreams: Work by day, dream by night, a local rock band just wants to make music for a living.
By G. Wayne Miller
The dream begins in garages and basements and high-school gyms. When it persists, it often brings a rock ‘n’ roller to a place like the Music Complex a hulking brick building in an industrial Pawtucket neighborhood that time has left behind. The windows are boarded. The street lamps cast ugly shadows when the sun goes down.
