The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) BEST Program for youth ages 8-21 years co-hosted the Celebrity Showdown at the Clark County Cattle Battle and an online auction to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio (RMHC). The Clark County Cattle Producers sponsored the event.
The Celebrity Showdown was hosted at the Champions Center in Springfield, Ohio on Jan. 29, 2021. For this event, youth were responsible for raising a minimum of $100 for the opportunity to dress up their cattle and present them to the celebrity judges. This year’s judges were Autumn Regula and her doctors, Dr. Lionel Chow of Dayton Children’s Hospital and Dr. Maryam Fouladi of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Through donations from family, friends, their local community and members of OCA, youth participating in the Celebrity Showdown raised $16,415.
No-one likes spending much time in hospital, as 12-year-old Xavier Cock will attest.
Xavier, who has Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS), spent eight weeks in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (W&CH) last year (from September to November), after being admitted with a perforated bowel.
“We took Xavier to hospital suffering from stomach pain, and they thought he had appendicitis, so flew him to the W&CH, but after a CT, they found he had a perforated bowel and sepsis,” Xavier’s mum, Krystal Cock (nee Taylor formerly from Balaklava) said.
Some eight weeks later, Xavier returned home to the farm near Bute, but six weeks later, just two days before Christmas, he experienced abdominal pain again.

Nicholas Hernandez, a labor leader who marched with Cesar Chavez in the 1970s and was a founding member of the Ronald McDonald Charities San Diego, died May 15.
He was 73.
Hernandez was one of six brothers and eight sisters. He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, in 1946 and grew up helping his father plow the field. When the family moved to Barrio Logan when he was seven, Hernandez brought that work ethic with him.
To pay for a private education at Saint Joseph’s grammer school, Hernandez got a job.

“He started working when he was 12 years old sweeping outside Perkin’s Super Market to pay his own way through grammar school,” said his wife, Connie Hernandez.
