Authorities ID body pulled from Lake Travis as 31-year-old Houston man

The body of a man that was recovered from Lake Travis last Saturday has been identified as 31-year-old Jermont Powers of Houston, the Travis County sheriff s office said Thursday. The sheriff s office dive team pulled Powers from the Devil s Cove area on the north side of Lake Travis, across from Hudson Bend. Search efforts in the area where Powers was reportedly last seen involved personnel from Texas Parks and Wildlife, Jonestown police and the Lower Colorado River Authority, which manages the lake for hydroelectricity and flood control. Texas Parks & Wildlife’s sonar Saturday morning revealed a viable location for the sheriff s office dive team to search, authorities said. Powers was found and recovered a few hours later.

Texas recovers from hail damage, but rain chances in Austin persist

Hailstones as big as fists were reported during storms Wednesday night and Thursday morning that pelted a swath from South Texas to Oklahoma, incurring damage costs estimated to be as much as $1 billion. The Austin area endured a fitful night of lightning, thunder and waves of rain, but it did not see the worst of the hail damage. But the city and its environs did get a welcome dose of precipitation as drought conditions in Texas persist. Data this week from the U.S. Drought Monitor, a consortium of academic and government researchers, showed that about 87% of Texas was experiencing some degree of drought. At this time last year, that number was only about 29%.

Rain forecast for Friday but drought conditions likely to worsen

As drought conditions intensify around the state, Central Texas could use the dose of rain forecasters say is coming Friday, but it might not be much help. The old rhyme about April showers bringing May flowers fails to take Austin s fickle spring weather into account. April isn t really even Austin s rainiest month that s actually May, which produces, on average, up to 4.44 inches of rain. Still, April normally sees about 2.09 inches of rainfall. But this year, with a little more than a week left in the month, Austin s main weather station at Camp Mabry has recorded only 0.46 of an inch. The city is practically parched compared with last year, when April had 2.88 inches of rainfall. April 2019 had 7.28 inches, one of the top 10 totals ever recorded for that month at Camp Mabry, according to the National Weather Service.
