NORTH PROVIDENCE – A new riverfront park will be named in honor of the man who did so much to ensure that it was acquired and protected.
The town will name the new park off Adams Lane for former Town Planner David Westcott, who died last April.
New Planner Brent Wiegand said the Land Trust, which previously acquired the park space on the Woonasquatucket River off Waterman Avenue as its largest parcel of property, voted last month to name the park the Westcott Memorial Park.
“He was a major player in getting that land,” said Wiegand, adding that the property is the Land Trust’s largest and most valuable one. “We definitely feel he deserves some type of credit.”

Distribution center approved at site of former Microfibres
The former Microfibres site at 1 Moshassuck St. in Pawtucket will soon be replaced with a modern distribution center.
PAWTUCKET – The City Planning Commission last month approved preliminary plans from JK Equities for a large-scale distribution center called Blackstone Distribution Center to replace the former Microfibres at 1 Moshassuck St.
Assistant Director of Planning Jay Rosa said the May 18 vote was for conditional approval, subject to additional permitting approval by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and utilities National Grid, Narragansett Bay Commission, and the Pawtucket Water Supply Board.
This will not be a rehab of the existing mill structure but a total demolition of the vacant industrial structure and new construction of a 159,562-square-foot distribution facility with 128 parking spaces and 36 loading spaces, according to the written decision on the plan.

(Providence, RI) The longtime head of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is departing. The governor s office says Janet Coit s last day will be June 18th, marking the end of a ten-year hold on the position. DEM deputy director Terrence Gray will become acting director. The Boston Globe reported late last month that Coit is set to join the U.S. Department of Commerce and her old boss, former Rhode Island governor and now Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, but Coit has not confirmed.
