The Day - Coast Guard deems two Rhode Island lighthouses surplus - News from southeastern Connecticut

New London Don’t look for the owners of the three lighthouses directing New London Harbor traffic to be snapping up any more of the aging sentinels anytime soon including two the Coast Guard’s trying to shed off the coast of nearby Rhode Island. “New London Maritime Society will not be applying for either of these Rhode Island lighthouses,” Susan Tamulevich, the society’s executive director, said Friday of Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly and Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown. Declared excess to the Coast Guard’s needs, the lighthouses, both of which date to 1856, can be had for free. But you have to keep them up, which is the whole reason they’re being made available.

Beach Season Starts Early in Rhode Island

Beach Season Starts Early in Rhode Island If you ask me, it is still way too chilly to hit the beach, but clearly no one is asking me, because Rhode Island has announced that several state beaches will officially be open as of this weekend. Weather permitting, Scarborough North and Roger Wheeler state beaches will be open starting this weekend, though it will be Saturdays and Sundays only, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). This is two whole weeks ahead of the normal state beach opening and the temperatures are still only going to be in the low to mid-70s at best.

ATVs in Newport: Police say riding in city beginning to cause issues

Newport Daily News NEWPORT  The Newport Police Department reports they’re “beginning to have issues” with ATVs, albeit nothing “major” and mostly in parks and parking lots. “We currently have not had street issues,” Newport Police Lt. April Amaral said in an email. “We thankfully do not have the big issue as Providence and Cranston, and I’ll assume Newport’s streets are a bit more difficult to navigate, especially during the summer.” The Providence Journal reported in March that Providence public safety officials announced a multifaceted approach to stopping illegal all-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, and dirt bikes on city streets, which included police continuing to enforce the law and destroy the machines when possible, as well as a hotline for residents to report illegal riding.

Two state beaches to open Saturday, weekends only

DEM Director Janet Coit said, “After the year we’ve all had, we’re glad to open two popular state beaches early so that Rhode Islanders can get outside and enjoy themselves when crowds are light. The National Weather Service is forecasting a sunny start to the day Saturday and a high near 70 in Narragansett, but a chance of showers in the afternoon. Sunday should be partly sunny with a high near 69, but also a chance of showers in the afternoon. All state beaches will be open daily, weather permitting, from Saturday, May 29, until Labor Day. The DEM is encouraging beachgoers to buy season parking passes or use the agency s daily flex pass, so they can use express lanes and get onto the beaches faster. More information is available and passes can be bought at www.riparks.com.
