NORTH PROVIDENCE – Mayor Charles Lombardi said he was disappointed when North Providence’s Geneva Pond at Notte Park wasn’t included on an initial list of ponds being restocked with fish, effectively canceling his annual fishing derby this month.
After calling representatives from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to ask why restocking wasn’t done in time for the event, he said they sent out a release that they would be delivering fish there on April 21.
Lombardi said there were about 20 ponds around the state that weren’t restocked during the first round, and he was told that the RIDEM didn’t stock them due to concerns over social distancing.
Westerly will spray for mosquitoes next week NBC 10 NEWS
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said Westerly will spray for mosquitoes next week.
The town will use a helicopter to spray mosquito larvicide across 500 acres of Chapman Swamp and nearby swamplands on Tuesday, weather permitting. The spraying will take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The DEM said Bti will be used to control mosquito breeding. Officials said Bti is naturally occurring and poses no risk to people.
The spraying is done to control mosquito populations that might spread eastern equine encephalitis or West Nile Virus.
Officials say people should take precautions against mosquito bites between dusk and dawn by wearing long sleeves and pants and using insect repellent.
