Unraveling the Mystery of Southern New England’s Cod
The Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank stocks are overfished, but a new puzzle has emerged in the past 10 years.

While the plight of Atlantic cod in the northeast is well known, the emergence of a fishery off southern New England has puzzled scientists, but delighted anglers.
These days, it’s common knowledge that Atlantic cod are in bad shape, and dramatically so. Based on 2019 stock assessments, both the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank stocks continue to be overfished and the groundfish fishery north of Cape Cod has shifted to focus predominantly on haddock and pollock.
Sponsors oppose medical waste facility proposed on East Greenwich-West Warwick border
STATEHOUSE â Sen. Bridget Valverde and Rep. Justine Caldwell introduced joint legislation last week which would prohibit new, high-heat waste incineration facilities in Rhode Island.
The bill comes on the heels of outcry and concern from their local constituents, who in large part, have come out in strong opposition against a proposed medical waste facility on the border of East Greenwich and West Warwick.Â
MedRecycler Inc. hopes to open its waste-to-energy plant at 1600 Division Road, and if approved, plans to dispose of up to 70 tons of medical waste a day. By using a process known as pyrolysis, which indirectly heats the waste in the absence of oxygen, the material would be evaporated into syngas, rather than just burned.Â

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) Rhode Island regulators have opened up an area in the lower Providence River to quahogging for the first time in decades.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced Friday that improvements in water quality in the Bay will gradually allow for more shellfishing further up the Bay, the Providence Journal reported.
Department staff could not find any records of shellfishers being allowed in the waters that far north in at least 75 years.
This expansion includes nearly a third of the Providence River. The water improvements are the result of advances in stormwater management that prevent tainted runoff from overwhelming systems.

PROVIDENCE â Itâs the official shell of Rhode Island. The quahog (pronounced KO-hog, for those who are new around here) is an edible bivalve mollusk, tasty when eaten raw with some lemon juice, or steamed and tossed with linguine and sauce, or prepared stuffies-style.
