Police: W-B man led cops on high-speed chase while drunk; subdued by K-9

A man led police on a high-speed chase from Wilkes-Barre to Newport Twp. before he crashed his car and a police dog subdued him as he fled on foot, according to city police. John L. Derhammer, 47, of Wilkes-Barre, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, DUI and harassment. The incident began with a dispute at a Park Avenue home on Saturday afternoon, according to an affidavit filed by Wilkes-Barre police. According to the affidavit: Two women at the residence told officers that Derhammer barged his way into the home, assaulted both women and damaged furniture during an argument.

Larksville man charged with soliciting teen for sex

A Larksville man is facing statutory sexual assault solicitation charges alleging he tried seducing a teenage boy he met online. Thomas Patrick Atchue, 48, of 65 Third St., is accused of befriending a 15-year-old boy on the dating app Grindr and trying to arrange a sexual meetup. According to charges filed by Luzerne County detectives, the teen reported that a man contacted him on the app in July, trying to arrange a sexual meeting. The pair set up a meeting in Wilkes-Barre on July 20, and the victim provided police a video showing Atchue showing up for the meeting — although he denied it was to meet a 15-year-old, according to the complaint.

Police: Suspect admits to meeting, killing autistic Bloomsburg woman

A 42-year-old man from Duncannon in Perry County was charged Sunday with homicide, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse after the body of Erica Shultz, Bloomsburg, was found in a wooded area east of Hobbie Road in Butler Twp. Harold David Haulman III admitted to killing Shultz, who was autistic and whom he met on an online dating site in November. He was taken into custody and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility following an arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Daniel O’Donnell in Drums. Haulman was denied bail because of the homicide charge and for being a threat to the public and himself, authorities said.
