Lakeland officials to consider issuing $60M bonds for capital projects

The city s Financial Director Mike Brossart said, if approved, he believes the city will need to borrow closer to $55 million to achieve its goals.  Nearly one-quarter of the bonds, or about $13 million, would be used to finance several city capital improvement projects. One of these would be to set aside approximately $3.5 million for Lakeland officials to purchase 106 acres of vacant land in the southwest area of the city to be used for a multi-purpose recreational fields and park, according to the resolution  The idea of a southwest park has been out there for a long time, City Manager Shawn Sherrouse said at Bond Committee meeting earlier this month. Now, its just a case of us cobbling it together.  

Wildfire burns at Lakeland Highlands Scrub, other sites being monitored

LAKELAND  A lightning strike ignited a wildfire at Lakeland Highlands Scrub Tuesday afternoon that has burned more than 30 acres and remains active.  Florida Fire Service s Lakeland office received a call around 3 p.m. Tuesday from Polk County asking for assistance to contain a brushfire in Lakeland Highlands Scrub. Strong winds and abnormally dry conditions allowed the spark to quickly spread, according to Todd Chlanda, a spokesperson for Florida Fire Service. The Lakeland Highlands Scrub fire was considered 95% contained but was still active Wednesday afternoon, according to Chlanda. Polk County officials have since closed off the preserve, as the property is part of the county s Environmental Lands Program. It is expected to be reopened by the weekend.

Amazon expansion at Lakeland Linder Airport met with pushback from residents

Studiale said he lives nowhere near the airport, but that his life is constantly interrupted by the rumble of low-flying jets over his house. He added it s ruined his ability to enjoy outdoor activities at his house.  David Pendry, a resident of Lakeside Preserve, said he and his family have to pause their conversations every time one of Amazon s jets passes overhead.  Veronika Guttenberger called Amazon a malignant cancerous growth whose rapid growth and progress is threatening Lakeland s quality of life with its noise, air pollution and increase in local traffic.  I don t like Amazon and I don t like this airport expansion,  she said, her words nearly drowned out by spontaneous applause and cheering.
