FDA prepares to OK 2nd vaccine as average daily cases, deaths hit records

(CNN) US officials say they’re “rapidly” working toward issuing emergency authorization for what would be the nation’s second COVID-19 vaccine even as coronavirus hospitalizations, cases and deaths are piling up in unprecedented ways.
The Food and Drug Administration is widely expected to issue the authorization soon for Moderna’s vaccine candidate, after the agency’s vaccine advisers voted Thursday to recommend this. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would need to green-light the vaccine before shots can be administered and a CDC advisory panel is meeting this weekend to discuss it.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The year 2020 has been a challenging one for frontline workers, including those who work at long-term care facilities and take care of some of the most vulnerable Hoosiers every day.
WISH-TV partnered with Subway and found a way to give back and express how grateful the community is for what they do.
News 8’s Alexis Rogers and McKinzie Roth visited Traditions at North Willow to surprise them with the “Gr8ful Give Back” as one of two long-term care facilities that received $2,500 worth of Subway gift cards for workers.
These are just a few moments that have made life a little easier for family members like Sara Tischbein.

(CNN) Within a week, eight nuns living in the Notre Dame of Elm Grove in Wisconsin died from COVID-19, all of whom, in their own ways, were mentors in the community.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame confirmed the deaths to CNN affiliate WTMJ, adding the sisters died of complications caused by the virus.
“Every one of our sisters is really important,” Sister Debra Sciano, the provincial leader of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province, told the news station. “Not only to us, but we feel they have touched thousands of lives we’ll never be aware of.”

(CNN) The Supreme Court on Thursday denied a request from a religious school in Kentucky to block regulations that temporarily restrict in-person instruction in elementary, middle and upper schools in the state due to COVID-19.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Hospitals across the state received their first doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine this week.
“It is overwhelming. It is exciting. It warms my heart to know that we are fighting this as a team,” said Misty Tidd, immunization clinician at Franciscan Health.
Physicians, nurses and pharmacists sat one by one on Friday at Franciscan Health’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic to get their vaccine.

“It just feels like all of our hard work that we have put in all year it is finally paying off,” said Stephanie Gartrell, pharmacist at Franciscan Health. “We are so close to getting through this, to getting back to our normal lives with our families and I just couldn’t be happier.”
