Women with type 1 diabetes experience a shorter reproductive period

E-Mail CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 3, 2021) The length of the female reproductive period (the time from the onset of menses to the final menstrual period) has important health implications. A new study compared the length of reproductive periods for women with type 1 diabetes with women without diabetes to confirm the effect diabetes has on the female reproductive system. Study results are published online today in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS). Insulin plays a key role in regulating female reproductive function, and previous studies have shown the effect of insulin deficiency on a woman s reproductive system. Until now, however, little was known about the effect of type 1 diabetes on the age of natural menopause.

Ovarian Insufficiency Raises the Risk of Osteoporosis

Ovarian Insufficiency Raises the Risk of Osteoporosis by Angela Mohan on  March 3, 2021 at 11:28 AM Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS). Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue that leads to fragility and an increased risk of fracture. The debilitating disease, which affects more women than men, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality when osteoporotic fractures occur, leading to an increased rate of institutionalization and risk for mortality. Previous studies have suggested an association between osteoporosis and POI, which is the loss of ovarian function before age 40 years. This new study, however, is the first one done on a larger scale, with more than 12,000 participants.

Vaginal Pessary Viable Alternative to Surgery for Weak Pelvic Floor

Most women stuck with pessary treatment for symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP), according to a long-term study. In a prospective study of 312 Chinese women with symptomatic POP, 75% continued with pessary treatment either with a ring or Gellhorn pessary 5 years after initial fitting, reported Lan Zhu, MD, of Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing, and colleagues. Appearing in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), the researchers pinpointed certain factors that were tied to a higher chance of women discontinuing pessary treatment. These included having a vaginal length less then 7.5 cm (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.3-5.7, P=0.007) and being unable to care for themselves (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.3-5.1,
