THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s city council pushed back on numerous provincial actions with a flurry of resolutions at its meeting Monday evening. A trio of resolutions passed unanimously Monday opposed provincial plans to sever the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) from Lakehead University, asked the province to reconsider a recent order closing outdoor recreation amenities, and objected to plans to reduce vaccine supply to the area.   City opposes NOSM independence Councillors unanimously passed a motion opposing a provincial plan to sever the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) from Lakehead University. Mayor Bill Mauro, who proposed the motion, said the lack of consultation over the plan with Lakehead president Moira McPherson was unusual and worrying.

Medical School Trying To Clear Up Misleading Statements

NOSM release The President, Dean and CEO of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine has decided to speak out amid wide-spread speculation regarding the schools future in Thunder Bay. The government of Ontario has introduced legislation to establish NOSM as an independent, standalone degree-granting institution. It also comes at a time when member school Laurentian is facing a financial crisis and going through insolvency. Dr. Sarita Verma she’s been inundated with questions since this happened asking about NOSM’s future but wasn’t allowed to comment at the time. She now says nothing is changing. Dr. Verma says there have been several misleading statements made in the media and directly to NOSM partners that have instilled fear and panic.

Column: NOSM weakened by split Back to video While Ross Romano, the minister of Colleges and Universities, presents this move as a natural evolution to a state of maturity, it is anything but that. I have no comment on the Hearst situation other than that the small faculty at Hearst has done an outstanding job under difficult circumstances of bringing high quality university level education to francophone students in the north. I do not know whether they view university status as helping them further their mandate, but I wish them well.
