Fayetteville native to lead North Carolina Highway Patrol

A Cumberland County native has been named the next commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday.  Maj. Freddy L. Johnson Jr. was raised in Fayetteville and is a Fayetteville State University alumnus, the release said. After graduating at the top of his class in the Highway Patrol Basic School in 1996, Johnson began his career as a state trooper in Lumberton, according to the news release. The majority of his career he spent in Cumberland and Robeson counties, the release said. “Being chosen to lead such a great organization with such great people is an incredible honor,” Johnson said in the news release. “I will do all I can to support the men and women of the patrol while continuing to build stronger partnerships with the communities we serve across this great state.

Bottom Row: L-R: Marco Duzell Banks, Timothy Jordan Heffner Four Arrested In Connection To Double Shooting In Alexander County April 7, 2021 23-year-old Nathaniel Lee Davis, 22-year-old Christina Jean Ledford, 18-year-old Marco Duzell Banks, and 26-year-old Timothy Jordan Heffner were all arrested by Alexander County Sheriff’s Officers. They are all charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury, trafficking marijuana, and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver controlled substance. Davis and Ledford are also charged with maintaining a vehicle or dwelling to keep controlled substance. Heffner and Banks are also charged with felony possession of schedule VI controlled substance.

North Carolina officer dies in single-vehicle crash

North Carolina officer dies in single-vehicle crash Associated Press NEWTON GROVE, N.C. (AP) Authorities say that a police officer from North Carolina s Sampson County has died in a single-car crash. WNCN reports that the accident occurred Saturday night and involved an officer from the Newton Grove Police Department.  The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the officer was Brent Nelson Hall, 26, of Clinton. The patrol said that he was driving to begin his shift in a department-owned Dodge Charger at a high rate of speed on U.S. 701 Business/Northeast Boulevard.  Authorities said that he was not pursuing anyone and did not have the lights and sirens activated. The highway patrol said that he was not wearing his seatbelt.
