The Changing Landscape of Education Darin King, CIO, North Dakota University System Darin King, CIO, North Dakota University System In the past two years our university system of 11 public colleges and universities has seen some significant changes in the way we go about the business of IT, focusing on two main areas: systemwide consolidation and heightened security measures. The first was prompted by legislative mandate. The 64th Legislative Assembly called for a solution to more than two dozen “Data inconsistencies” found throughout the system. For the most part, many of these had to deal with definitions and reporting, although many required technical action to be taken by our IT teams.

The higher education sector, no stranger to steep cuts during economic recessions, braced for further budget reductions in the 2022 fiscal year. But many public higher education officials’ worst fears have not been realized at least not yet, experts say. Governors’ proposed state budgets are a mixed bag, with several states pushing to increase higher education funding or at least restore last year’s cuts. “We’re seeing almost as many budget proposals protecting or bolstering higher ed as we are cutting higher ed,” said Sunny Deye, program director for postsecondary education at the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Burgum appoints Jeffry Volk, reappoints Dr Casey Ryan to Board of Higher Education

SPECIAL TO DEVILS LAKE  JOURNAL BISMARCK, N.D.– Gov. Doug Burgum has appointed Jeffry Volk of West Fargo to a four-year term on the state Board of Higher Education and reappointed Dr. Casey Ryan of Grand Forks to a second four-year term on the board. Volk is president and CEO of Moore Holding Co., an engineering consultancy, and he previously served as president and CEO of its subsidiary, West Fargo-based Moore Engineering Inc., from 2005 to 2018. Volk worked for Moore Engineering for more than 40 years and led the employee-owned company through a period of expansion. As a water resources engineer, Volk played a key role in some of the region’s largest water projects, including the Sheyenne River Diversion, Maple River Dam and the planned Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion Project.
