One person dead, another injured in separate Berkeley County fires

One person dead, another injured in separate Berkeley County fires By CHARLESTON, W.Va. One person died in a Valentine’s Day fire in Berkeley County. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office released information Friday regarding two Feb. 14 fires. The first fire happened early Sunday morning at an Inwood residence. A 62-year-old male had escaped the home but went back into the residence to rescue his wife and pets. He collapsed leaving the structure, and died at Berkeley County Medical Center from injuries. The State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was the result of hazardous charging of lithium batteries; the batteries were on top of a hot water heater and the charging unit used a two-prong outlet plug rather than a more secure three-prong outlet plug.

Man dies in Parkersburg apartment fire | News, Sports, Jobs

PARKERSBURG A man was found dead inside an apartment that burned early Tuesday morning. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:05 a.m. to a report of a smoke alarm at a one-bedroom apartment with someone inside at 2007 Nash St., a Parkersburg Housing Authority location, Parkersburg Fire Chief Jason Matthews said. They arrived at the scene four minutes later and focused first on rescue efforts, he said. “When they got inside, the male victim was already deceased,” Matthews said. Because the apartment’s doors and windows were shut, there was heavy smoke but minimal fire, he said. The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes, the chief said.
