WVDNR partners with various organizations on Musky Mortality Project

WVDNR partners with various organizations on Musky Mortality Project SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has partnered with various state fish and wildlife agencies (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Wisconsin), muskellunge angling organizations, Costal Carolina University and West Virginia University on a musky mortality project. The study will help determine whether Muskellunge catch-and-release angling during the summer poses a significant source of mortality in southern populations. Studies are concurrently taking place in the James River (VA) and Stonewall Jackson Lake (WV), as well as in a hatchery pond setting. “We have implanted radio transmitters into several fish in all locations,” said Jeff Hansbarger, WVDNR fish biologist. “We track these fish throughout the summer months to evaluate the effects that warm water catch-and-release fishing may have on the musky population.”

Record-breaking fish caught and released in West Virginia

This fish might set multiple records. An angler in West Virginia caught a record-breaking muskellunge fish last week. Since he decided to release the fish, however, it’s possible that the animal could continue to grow and another angler could break the record by catching the same fish. Chase Gibson, a fishing guide in West Virginia, reeled in a musky that weighed 39.6 pounds and measured 54-inches-long, WFXR Fox reports. Gibson was reportedly fishing at Burnsville Lake near Clarksburg and Charleston at the time. Gibson told the news outlet, I was fishing a timbered cove with a lot of crappie s suspended on the timber. I caught it on a Musky Innovations Dyin’ Dawg.

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources urges public to leave young wildlife alone | News, Sports, Jobs

editorial@newsandsentinel.com CHARLESTON The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is urging people to leave young wildlife alone. Doing anything else is illegal, unsafe and often detrimental to the animal’s health, the division said. Picking up, touching or getting close can increase the chance of the animal being harmed. “When you touch or approach young animals, you leave behind scent that predators may key in on and increase the risk to that young animal,” said Vinnie Johnson, a wildlife biologist for WVDNR. “Watching these young animals can be an enjoyable pastime, but the WVDNR recommends that this is done from a distance with the use of binoculars.”
