Beware scaling back UK furlough scheme too soon, warns Resolution Foundation Jasper Jolly © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Gareth Fuller/PA The strength of the UK jobs market and rates of pay has been overstated, according to new research, just as the government prepares to cut back its wage support scheme for furloughed workers this week. There is a risk of “dangerous complacency”, the Resolution Foundation warned, as people are still working fewer hours than they were before the pandemic and headline pay growth is overstated. Total hours worked in the UK economy are still about 7% below pre-crisis levels, a fall comparable with the depths of recession, according to the thinktank’s analysis based on a poll of 8,000 workers. Underlying annual pay growth remains slower than before the pandemic hit Europe, it added.

Trade unions have urged bosses to let workers finish early so they can watch England take on Germany on Tuesday. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) says employers should talk to their staff and make arrangements for the 5pm kick-off. Millions are expected to head to pubs across the country for the game but industry experts predict that pint sales will still be hampered by Covid restrictions.  The TUC says flexible working has many benefits for companies such as cutting down on absenteeism and raising productivity. It added that the rise in home working will mean many employees will already be at home.

Need to recognise domestic abuse as a workplace issue

It’s a question a lot of employers are asking themselves at the moment. In January 2021, the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy published its response to a consultation on how employees who are survivors of domestic abuse can be supported in the workplace. The response stated that the Government would consult on changes to employment rights to support survivors of domestic abuse, such as strengthening the right to work flexibly. The response was accompanied by an open letter to all employers from the UK Business Minister with a call to action to take steps to support employees. Various organisations (such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Business in the Community) have also prepared guidance for employers in an attempt to shine a spotlight on the issue.

The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) has confirmed that Wimbledon ticket holders will be able to use their electronic tickets to exit and re-enter the stadium.
