WATERTOWN â Construction on what could be the biggest economic development project in Jefferson Countyâs history could start as early as Oct. 1.
In February, the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency announced that Convalt Energy, a New York City-based renewable energy company, plans to build a solar manufacturing plant in the agencyâs proposed business park near the Watertown International Airport on Route 12F in the town of Hounsfield.
Convalt Energy President Hari Achuthan told the JCIDA board Thursday that he targets construction of the 315,000-square-foot manufacturing plant to start by October. It could be in operation by June 2022, he added.
Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, made the announcement Tuesday in a press release.
âI am proud to return over $1 million in taxpayer dollars back to the district in the form of this important grant,â she said. âOur local airports are a critical component of North Country infrastructure and tourism. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact this funding will have on economic growth in the region.â
U.S. Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both D-N.Y., had announced on May 21 that the Massena International Airport was one of several Upstate New York airports to receive a portion of $21,197,296 in Federal Aviation Administration funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airport received $98,900 to construct, rehabilitate, modify and expand the airportâs sand and chemical storage building.
