WWL-TV wins three regional Edward R Murrow Awards, including best digital news coverage

Murrow Awards, including awards for best digital news coverage, hard news and a special award for excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion. The awards were announced Thursday by the Radio Television Digital News Association. WWL’s top award for best digital coverage recognizes content on WWLTV.com, WWL-TV’s app and social media platforms. The entry included links to multiple stories in the investigative series “Standard of Care,” examining the deadly toll of the COVID-19 pandemic in local nursing homes. The series was produced by investigative reporters Katie Moore and Mike Perlstein and photographer/editors T.J. Pipitone and Derek Waldrip. The station’s COVID-19 tracker and interactive map, overseen by senior digital producer Kevin Dupuy, was also included in the Murrow digital news entry.

TUCSON (KVOA) - News 4 Tucson was awarded two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence and Best Newscast on Thursday. Since 1971, the Radio Television Digital News Association has been recognizing news organizations for their outstanding work in electronic journalism through the Edward R. Awards. According to organizers, the award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism. “Local journalists across the country guided Americans through a pandemic, ongoing racial reckoning and a fraught election cycle, despite facing unprecedented operational challenges and an astonishing number of physical attacks during 2020,” said Dan Shelley, RTDNA Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. “The persistence of the regional Murrow Award winners we recognize today is a testament to these journalists’ commitment to their First Amendment duty.”
