A Delmar police officer is in shock trauma in Baltimore after police say he was assaulted April 25.
Cpl. Keith Heacook went to a home in the 11000 block of Buckingham Drive in the Yorkshire Estates Community at 5:12 a.m. for a reported fight in progress when he was assaulted, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
“At this point in the investigation, it is unclear what transpired inside the residence, but we do know the officer was involved in a physical altercation,” Fournier said.
After Heacook had responded to the home, Fournier said dispatchers began checking on the officer and received no response. At that time, Fournier said, additional officers were dispatched, and a Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Delaware State Police trooper arrived on scene to find the officer unconscious in the residence.
A Delaware police officer was seriously injured early Sunday morning when he responded to a call about a fight in progress at a home in the Yorkshire Estates community of Delmar.
Cpl Keith Heacook didn’t respond to dispatchers after arriving on the scene shortly after 5 a.m. The dispatchers sent more officers to the address, and a Wicomico County Sheriff’s deputy and a Delaware State Trooper found Heacock unconscious inside the home, the Delaware State Police said.
Emergency Medical personnel initially took him TidalHeath in Salisbury, but he was later transferred to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with significant injuries and is in critical condition.
They rendered first aid, and Heacook was rushed to TidalHealth in Salisbury before being transferred to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with “significant” injuries, Fournier said.
As police investigated, they found an elderly couple who had also been assaulted across the street. Fournier said their attack was related to the first, and the couple was rushed to area hospitals, with one also transferred to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Several people who were in the house where Heacook was assaulted were taken into custody and there was no further threat to the general public, Fournier said.

SALISBURY, Md. – Across the state of Maryland, courts are getting ready to welcome jurors back into the court rooms on Monday. It’s going to be a busy several months for court houses across the state, especially in Wicomico County.
Administrative Judge for Wicomico County Circuit Court Jimmy Sarbanes says they have about 600 cases to get through. He adds the court is scheduling out some civil cases as far as Summer of 2023. “Those are cases that we just have to schedule now. That doesn’t include all the cases that have been scheduled that are awaiting trial,” said Judge Sarbanes.
